Phillip Douglas Kemp

d. August 23, 2018

On Thursday, August 23, 2018, Phillip Douglas Kemp, age 75, of Asheboro, passed away peacefully with his family by his side.  Phil was the son of the late DeWitt Talmadge Kemp and Dorothy Cashatt Kemp.

Phil was a 1961 graduate of Asheboro High School, and studied business at High Point College and Asheboro College.  Immediately following high school, he enlisted and proudly served his country through a four-year stint (1961-1965) in the United States Air Force.  Upon returning home, he joined his father and brother (Tommy) in the family business, Kemp Chrysler-Plymouth, Inc. of Asheboro, serving as the company’s Secretary/Treasurer from 1965 through 1975.  In 1977 he became the owner and President of Kemp Motor Mart, Inc.  Phil also served as sales manager for Stuart-Bowman Cadillac-Olds from 1988-1990, and was a Sales Representative for Pugh Oil Company from 1990-1995. From 1995 until recently, Phil was a certified residential real estate appraiser, doing business as Kemp Appraisals.

Phil and his family were most proud of his distinguished service to Asheboro and Randolph County.  He was a member of the Randolph County Board of Commissioners until 2016, first elected in 1992, serving as Chairman of that board for eight years.  He also served on the Asheboro City School Board for one term.  Phil served as a board member for many local organizations including:  Chairman of the Randolph Criminal Justice Partnership, Randolph County Partnership for Children, Corporate Board of Directors for Randolph Hospital, Ferree Foundation, Randolph County Board of Social Services, and the Ethics Committee of Randolph Hospital.

Among his many awards through the years are the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the highest civilian honor in North Carolina, awarded by Governor Pat McCrory, and a Proclamation in Appreciation and Recognition of Phil D. Kemp, proclaimed by the Randolph County Board of Commissioners, Darrell L. Frye, Chairman.

Phil is survived by his devoted and loving family members: his wife of 50 years, Nan T. Kemp, his son Douglas Kemp and his wife Cathy, grandsons Sam and Jack Kemp, brother and sister-in-law Tommy and Caroline Kemp, and several nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his beloved son, Guy Kemp.

The family will receive friends Saturday, August 25, 2018 from 5-8:00 pm at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Ave., Asheboro.  A graveside service with military honors by the Randolph County Honor Guard will be held Sunday, August 26, 2018 at 2:00 pm at Oaklawn Cemetery with Darrell Frye, Phillip Teachey, and Harold Holmes officiating.

The family requests memorials be made to Asheboro/Randolph Public Library, 201 Worth St., Asheboro, NC 27203 or Randolph Cancer Center, 373 N. Fayetteville St., Asheboro, NC 27203.
