Ravis Larry Emerson

d. March 29, 2019

The Reverend Canon R. Larry Emerson, Vicar Erneritus of All Souls Anglican Church in Asheboro left his earthly body with its physical pain and emotional suffering to join his Lord and Savior and the Church Expectant on the morning of March 29, 2019. He was born on September 28, 1935 in Greensboro, NC, the only child of Ravis 0. Emerson and Mary M. Hollady Emerson. Larry graduated from Greensboro Senior High then Guilford College in 1957 and did subsequent graduate work there in 1959 and 1960. A birthright Quaker he was called to the ministry at an early age and was recorded in 1960. He served Friends churches in several counties before coming to Asheboro in 1963. Larry wanted to serve as an Army chaplain, and in 1965 he joined and was ordained in the Methodist Church and pursued graduate studies in religion at Duke University (1965-67). Commissioned in the US Army Reserve in 1965, he attended chaplaincy school but his 22 years of service were primarily in infantry training until his retirement in 1987 with the rank of Major. Apart from the ministry, Larry's interests and career choices were varied, from private industry to restaurant ownership to law enforcement. His years in law enforcement began at Asheboro Police Department in 1974, then the Randolph County Sheriffs Office until his retirement as chief deputy in 1990. In 1991 the Lord led him to All Souls Anglican Church where he was immediately moved by the solemn and beautiful liturgy. He joined the church and in 1992 was ordained Deacon then Priest. Larry felt truly blessed to serve as Vicar of All Souls until his retirement in 2010. In recognition of his faithful service to the Lord and to the Anglican church, Larry was bestowed the honor of Vicar Emeritus in fall of 2018. Larry truly had a servant's heart and cared deeply about people and lived the first and second Commandments. His community involvement ranged from lifeguard instructor to volunteer fireman to chaplain associate to leadership positions with various organizations such as the Salvation Army, Red Cross, Mental Health Assoc. and Rotary. A certified Law Enforcement instructor, he taught and coordinated Basic Law Enforcement Training and Jail Certification schools, and instructed Criminal Justice classes at Randolph Community College until 1999. Larry loved All Souls and his parishioners, and felt humbled and privileged to be able to minister to people facing problems, mentor and provide spiritual guidance, and to be able to help them in life's difficult situations, especially sickness and death. Surviving are Larry's beloved wife of 34 years, Lindsay Arrington; daughter Debra and husband Christopher Arrington of Trevett, ME; granddaughter Stephanie and husband Jonathan Siswick and great grandson Bentley of Provo, UT; grandson William Arrington and fiancée Carley Doughty of Topsham, ME, and his "kitty girl," Cinnamon.
