Peggy Brittain Woodruff

JANUARY 25, 1937 – JUNE 8, 2019

On June 8, 2019, after a beautiful life of faith and service, Peggy B. Woodruff, age 82, journeyed to her eternal home with her Lord and Savior. Peggy was born in Asheboro on January 25, 1937, the daughter of Robert Franklin and Ulnah Allred Brittain. She graduated from Seagrove High School and received both her Bachelor's and her Master's degrees in Education from Appalachian State University.

Peggy married Thomas Hardin Woodruff in 1960. After starting their careers in Charlotte, the couple returned to Peggy's hometown of Asheboro in 1971.

Peggy was a teacher and education administrator for 38 years – first in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and later in the Asheboro City Schools. While she most often served as a third and fourth grade teacher, she also held a long tenure as the Reading Coordinator for the Asheboro City Schools.

Nothing gave Peggy more joy than inspiring the mind of a child. She took an active role in encouraging her students to be and to do their best, while also magnifying their strengths. Peggy received the Terry Sanford Award, in recognition of excellence in public instruction, for the 1981-1982 school year. She was also named as the Asheboro City Schools' Teacher of the Year for the 1982 – 1983 school year.

Peggy held a lifetime love of Flag Springs United Methodist Church, the church of her youth and young adulthood. When she returned to Asheboro in 1971, Peggy joined Central United Methodist Church, where she was a devoted member and served in many capacities including Lay Leader, Sunday School teacher, and member of the Wednesday Morning Prayer Group, the United Methodist Women, and Chancel Choir. She also served as Lay Leader of the High Point District of the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church, a role that she treasured as she trained others to share their faith stories and to make disciples for Jesus.

In her spare time, Peggy was active in the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, the Asheboro Optimist Club, the Asheboro Women's Club, and the Friends of the Randolph County Public Library. She also enjoyed flower gardening, visiting with friends (often offering gifts of homegrown flowers), music, painting, and selflessly looking for ways that she might serve others.

Peggy was predeceased by her mother, father, husband, and brother Robert (Bob) D. Brittain.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, June 14th, at Central UMC. The family will receive visitors in the alcove adjacent to Central UMC's sanctuary, at 12:30pm prior to the service. Burial will follow at the cemetery of Flag Springs United Methodist Church. The family will receive visitors at the Woodruff residence at other times.
