d. July 26, 2019

Sarah Brown McCain, 89, formerly of Asheboro, NC, passed away Friday, July 26, 2019 at Ashton Health and Rehab, McLeansville, NC after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease.  Sarah was born February 24, 1930 in Asheboro to William Riley and Dorothy Brown Brown, the youngest of six.

Sarah loved her family and friends and quite often showed her love by cooking for them.  She found delight in gardening, canning, cooking and baking as well as spending time with family and friends.  She also loved picking strawberries and making homemade ice cream!

She began her professional career at The Bank of Randolph in 1948, being hired by Mr. W.J. Armfield, who affectionately, called her “Brownie”.  The Bank of Randolph later became part of Wachovia Bank (now known as Wells Fargo), where she filled many different roles from Bank Teller to Branch Manager and retired after 48 years of service.

She was a member of Back Creek Friends Meeting, where she faithfully served in different capacities, her favorite being how she was able to help with the “Back Creek Good Neighbor Fund” meal, where she baked many, many cakes!  The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the members of the “Sam Henley” Sunday School Class, for their faithfulness in sending cards to Sarah monthly for many years.  Before attending Back Creek, she attended South Plainfield Friends and Asheboro Friends, serving as Treasurer, being on Ministry and Counsel, and singing in the choir.  Sarah also served as Treasurer for the Southern Quarter several years as well as Treasurer for the North Carolina Yearly Meeting for years 1979 – 1982.

She was a member of Randolph Chapter 210, Order of the Eastern Star, for over 50 years.  She held many positions, including serving multiple terms as Worthy Matron.  She also served as District Deputy Grand Matron as well as Grand Representative of North Carolina to Pennsylvania.

She married Robert G. “Bob” McCain on September 19, 1948 at Union Grove Christian Church, who predeceased her on March 6, 1987.  Additionally, she is predeceased by her first grandson, Cameron Michael Harris.  Sarah was a loving and giving Mother, “Nana” and a friend to many.

She is survived by her daughter, Suzanne “Suzie” McCain Harris, and husband, Mike of Kernersville, NC, grandsons, who she referred to as “Her Boys”, Evan Michael Harris and Seth McCain Harris, both of Kernersville and several nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved dearly.

The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to the staff at Ashton Place for their care of Sarah, especially in the last several months.  Additionally, Hospice and Palliative Care were WONDERFUL to Sarah’s family and they want to specifically express their thanks to Lynley SanGeorge for her compassionate heart while working with the family.
