Talmadge Spurgeon Baker, Jr. age 85, of Asheboro died Friday, September 13, 2019 at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro. Mr. Baker was born November 30, 1933 the son of Talmadge S. and Annie Gause Baker. Talmadge was a gentle, kind and caring man who served God, his family, his nation and his community. Wherever life took him, he always served the local community and established lifelong relationships. He will be greatly missed. Talmadge was a native of Coward, SC, a graduate of Lake City High School, Clemson University, and received his master's degree from NC State University. He served in the US Army and worked for many years as the Director of the Randolph County Cooperative Extension Service. He served as NC and National Treasure of Agricultural Agents. He served for 24 years on the Asheboro City Council, two terms as Mayor Pro Tem, and for many years on the Piedmont Regional Transportation Authority, where he was instrumental in getting interstates 73 and 74 in Randolph County. He was active in Randolph County Service and Community organizations which included Rotary, Randolph Country Chamber of Commerce, United Way, Arts Guild, Randolph County Livestock Association, YMCA, the Zoo Society. Talmadge loved his Rotary Club where he was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a longtime member of Central United Methodist Church. Talmadge loved to cook. He was known for spreading joy across the community at Christmas time with his Christmas cookies and Low Country Boil Fund Raisers. He is survived by his wife: Sara Campbell Baker; son Kevin Baker and wife Teresa and granddaughter Lauren Baker of Stem, NC The family will receive friends Tuesday, September 17, 2019 from 5:30 PM-8:00 PM at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue, Asheboro, NC. The funeral will be Wednesday, September 18, 2019 at 11:00 AM at Central United Methodist Church, 300 South Main Street, Asheboro with Dr. J.F. Howard Sr. and Fred Huffstetler officiating. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Cemetery, Asheboro with Military Honors.
