Obituary of Gary Thomas Luck

Gary Thomas Luck, age 79, of Asheboro passed away peacefully with family by his side on Thursday, January 9, 2020 at his home. Gary was born in Randolph County on May 27, 1940 to Henry and Mary Abernathy Luck, and was raised by his paternal grandparents, Willis and Florrie Lewellan Luck. He was a 1958 graduate of Seagrove High School and was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corp. Gary worked most of his life at Energizer Battery, where he retired after 37 years of service. He was always known to be an honest, hard-working man with a generous heart. He enjoyed playing his guitar for family and friends, restoring farm tractors, working in his gardens and around the family farm, and spending time with his family - especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Helen Varner Luck; son, Rodney Luck and wife, Tammy of Asheboro; daughter, Melanie Luck Avelino and fiancé, Bob McClester of Asheboro; brother, Ricky Luck of Asheboro; 10 grandchildren, Destini Luck of Asheboro, Carissa Skipper and husband, Ryan of Asheboro, Brandon McCaskill and wife, Joy of Winston-Salem, Chris Luck and Rodney Luck of Asheboro, Ryan Avelino of Chicago, IL, Jeffrey Avelino, Jessica Avelino, and Marissa Avelino, all of Asheboro, and Austin McClester of Asheboro; and 14 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents and grandparents, Gary was preceded in death by his son, Gary Thomas Luck, Jr. (Tommy) of Asheboro; and sister, Barbara Hussey of Woodbridge, Virginia. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Perry Smith and Ray Luck for always being a loyal friend to him. The family will receive friends Monday, January 13, 2020 from 1:00-2:00 PM at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue, Asheboro. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 PM in the Pugh Funeral Home Chapel with Tim Moon officiating. Burial will be in New Union United Methodist Church Cemetery.
