Mr. Donald Ray Smith, age 72, passed peacefully into the presence of the Lord on Sunday, May 10, 2020, at Randolph Hospice House, surrounded by his loving family. He was born June 3, 1947, the eldest son of Raymond T. Smith and Jocelyn Harvell (Smith) Moffatt and was raised in the High Pine Community. He graduated from Seagrove High School in 1965 and attended Randolph Technical Community College. Don was humble, hard-working and selfless. He worked for 15 years at Union Carbide before starting his own landscaping business in 1983. He also owned Caraway Farms and Nursery. His landscape design can still be seen throughout the communities he served. He was a faithful member of Beulah Baptist Church for over 49 years, where he served as a Deacon. When he wasn't plowing a field or feeding cattle, he enjoyed the fellowship of his friends at the Grantville store. He is survived by his wife of 52 years: Brenda Pennell Smith; daughters and their husbands whom he loved as sons: Kristie (Dean) Smith-Harris and Karen (Travis) Schalesky, of Asheboro; grandchildren: Daryn Trogdon Jr., Luke Trogdon, Seth Trogdon, Olivia Schalesky, Jenna Schalesky, Karey Harris, and Jake Harris; brothers: Michael Smith and J. Mark Smith, both of Charlotte, nieces: Mrs. Karla Woolard of Asheboro, Ms. Alexandra Smith of Charlotte, and nephews: Dwight Pennell Jr. of Greensboro, Jeff Pennell of Emerald Isle, and Joseph Smith of Charlotte. Mr. Smith will lie in state at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue in Asheboro on Wednesday, May 13, 2020, from 1:00 to 5:00pm. A private graveside service will be held Thursday, May 14, 2020 at Mount Tabor Community Church Cemetery, 1269 Mt. Tabor Church Rd., Asheboro. His service will be officiated by Dr. Curtis Barbery and Dr. Neal Jackson. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff at Randolph Health and Hospice of Randolph for their compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Beulah Baptist Church Building Fund, 8454 Howard Mills Road, Bennett, NC 27208 or Hospice of Randolph, P.O. Box 9, Asheboro, NC 27204-0009.
