Anne Varner Scarborough, 91, went to the Lord's loving arms on May 18, 2020. Her death follows a long and progressive fight with dementia. She passed away in Raleigh, NC at a longterm care facility where she was being cared for by the kind staff as well as hospice nurses.
Anne was born in 1929 in Salisbury, NC to Clifford L. Varner and Frances Tarpley Varner. She graduated from UNC Greensboro ("Women's College") and then was a social worker in Randolph County. She married Thomas Allen Scarborough in Salisbury in 1951. Except for a brief time living in Wadesboro their home was in Asheboro, NC. A few years after Tom's death she moved close to her family at an independent living facility in Raleigh.
She was active in the Methodist Women, her Sunday school class and Circle at Central United Methodist Church in Asheboro. Anne was an avid reader for most of her life. She was the best of moms, grandmothers, and great grandmothers - selfless and caring. Her nature was always sweet and cheerful. The family has many cherished memories with her. She will be missed very much, and her love will always be felt.
She is survived by son Allen (wife Shelley) Scarborough of Sanford, NC, granddaughters Mandy (husband Adam) Hurley of Fayetteville, NC and Rachel (husband Matthew) Runkle of Raleigh, NC, and great grandchildren Preston Hurley and Banks and Wynne Runkle.
A private graveside service will be held at Oaklawn Cemetery in Asheboro.
