Mary Estelle Bickford Pennypacker, age 96, of Asheboro passed away on Wednesday, May 27, 2020 at Brookdale Senior Living Solutions of Asheboro.
Mrs. Pennypacker was born in Hermon, ME on April 7, 1924 to Benjamin and Harriet Witherly Bickford. She grew up in Hermon, ME and later lived in Hightstown, NJ, Surf City, NJ, and Manahawkin, NJ. She was retired from the New Jersey Department of Transportation. She was a member of Fayetteville Street Baptist Church in Asheboro. Mary was a Grange member and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husbands, Frank W. DeWitt and Earl W. Pennypacker, son, Frank Wood DeWitt, and sisters, Pauline B. Bemis, Louise B. Pratt, and Mary E. Bickford. Mary was a talented carpenter, refinisher, decorator, gardener, roofer, and sider. Mary enjoyed knitting, crocheting, painting, and working Crossword and Sudoko puzzles.
She is survived by her daughter, Dianne Empie and husband Curt of Asheboro; son, David W. DeWitt of Gardner, MA; grandchildren, Terri A. Groh, Timothy D. Ackerley, Tracy A. Gockel, Jonathan B. DeWitt; 9 great grandchildren; and 1 great great grandchild.
Mrs. Pennypacker will lie in state Sunday, May 31, 2020 from 2:00-5:00 pm at Pugh Funeral Home in Asheboro. A private service will be held.
