Reverend Alvin James "AJ" Kendrick of Asheboro, North Carolina went to meet his Savior on Thursday, July 9, 2020 surrounded by family. He was born on June 13, 1926 in Cleveland, Tennessee. He was the son of the late Chester and Pearl Kendrick. He was the fourth of ten children, nine boys and one girl. Referring to his siblings, A.J. said, "We had enough for a baseball team with a lady umpire." On October 14, 1950, he married his "sweetheart”, Martha Gray Dunovant, who would be his wife for 67 years and 68 days. She was the absolute love of his life. To prepare for ministry, he attended Pilgrim Bible College, Kernersville, North Carolina, and Central Wesleyan College, Central, South Carolina. His first year of active ministry was at the Sandy Cross Wesleyan Church where he served from 1954-1956. While pastoring the Belmont First Wesleyan Church from 1958-1964, he became an ordained minister with The North Carolina Wesleyan Methodist Church, on July 26, 1959. He later pastored at Lincolnton First Wesleyan Church from 1964-1972. First Wesleyan Church in Asheboro was his next pastorate for 19 years, where he served from 1972-1991. After his retirement, he returned to serve as a supply pastor at Liberty Mt. Olivet from 1992-2008. His ministry also consisted of a life of volunteerism. Music was a vital thread of his life and he shared Jesus not only in life but in song. The group, The Good Times Band toured numerous Randolph County nursing homes and various Fall Festivals, sharing in word and music. A.J. was known for his infectious smile and his ability to make others laugh. He always had a poem, song, or story ready for any situation. He was a vital prayer warrior calling neighborhood residents, friends, church, and family by name in prayer. He is survived by his daughter, Cindy Kendrick Callicutt (Everett) of Asheboro, NC, daughter-in-law, Sharon Carter Kendrick of Greensboro, NC; grandchildren, Taylor Callicutt (Courtney), Trent Callicutt (Rachel), Julia Callicutt and fiancé, Chad Riehl, Tanner Callicutt, all of Asheboro, Matthew Kendrick and A.J. Kendrick of Greensboro , NC; brothers, Dennis Kendrick of Jamestown, NC, and Larry Kendrick (Pam) of Eden, NC. He has a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends that will miss him greatly. He was preceded in death by his wife, son, Stephen James "Steve" Kendrick, brothers, C.L., Arthell, Melvin, Harold, Bill, Roy Kendrick, and sister, LaVerne Warren. Rev. Kendrick will lie in state at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Ave., Asheboro, NC from noon until 5:00 pm Sunday, July 12, 2020. Services will be held Monday, July 13, 2020 at First Wesleyan Church in Asheboro at 3 PM. Services will be live streamed on the Asheboro First Wesleyan Facebook page. For the health concerns of all in attendance, a mask will be required for participation in the services. Please adhere to social distancing protocol. Burial will follow at Callicutt Memorial Church, 3331 R & H Drive, off of High Pine Church Road, Asheboro, North Carolina. Memorials may be made to Asheboro First Wesleyan Church, 915 Straight Street, Asheboro 27203 or to Callicutt Memorial Church, 5339 High Pine Church Road, Asheboro, North Carolina 27205.
