Harris Rayvon Burris, Sr.

d. July 31, 2020

Harris Rayvon Burris, Sr., age 85, of Virginia Beach, VA, passed away on July 31, 2020 at his home, surrounded by family. He was born on November 28, 1934 to David and Maggie Hinson Burris. He was the youngest of 8 children. Rayvon (aka Ray) was a loving and hard-working family man. He was born and raised in Asheboro, NC where he met his high school sweetheart, and wife of 67 years, Phyllis Robbins Burris. Together they raised 3 children: Harris Rayvon (Ray) Burris, Jr., Gregory Burris, and Wendy Burris Tompkins. He also has 9 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, his sister Polly Newton, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will cherish his memory. Family was the most important thing to him. He always made time for them throughout his life, whether it was coaching his son's little league teams, taking a family vacation to Disney World, or babysitting ALL of his grandchildren; and when the Navy brought him to Virginia he looked forward to trips back to North Carolina to visit his extended family. A few of his other favorite things were square dancing (in his younger years), the Washington Nationals, the Washington Redskins, his wife's potato salad and cheesecake, and his dogs...he loved all of his dogs. He had some of the craziest sayings...He always had "heartburn that would kill a mule", and if he ate something he liked it was "so good it'll make you slap your grandma". He was a retired United States Navy veteran, air traffic controller, and a retired firefighter from Naval Air Station Norfolk. He also worked both part and full-time at the Naval Station Fuel Farm (Norfolk) for 40 years. There will never be a day when we won't think of him. The family will receive friends on Saturday, August 8, 2020 from 11:30 am-1:00 pm at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue in Asheboro, NC. Funeral services will follow on Saturday at 1:00 pm at the Pugh Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be held in Randolph Memorial Park with military honors by the Randolph County Honor Guard.
