Opal "Irene" Cox, 88, of Asheboro, NC passed away on August 15, 2020 at Randolph Hospital, Asheboro. Irene was born to the late Suzie Caroline Latham Whitt and Martin Squire Whitt on January 22, 1932. She worked at Acme-McCrary Corporation as a knitter for 68 years. In her spare time she enjoyed sewing and spending time with her grandchildren. Irene is survived by her daughter, Renée Russell and husband, Robbie; brother, Hoyt Whitt; grandchildren, Brittany Royal and husband, Chris, Brandon Russell, and Bella Russell; and great granddaughter, Ariel Grace Royal. She is preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Clyde Cox, parents, Suzie Caroline Latham Whitt and Martin Squire Whitt, brothers, Jack Latham, Kenneth Whitt, and Douglas Whitt. Irene's body will lie in state on Thursday, August 20, 2020 from 1:00-5:00 pm at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue in Asheboro. Funeral service will be held graveside at Randolph Memorial Park, Asheboro on Friday, August 21, 2020 at 2:00 pm with Mike Thompson officiating. The family will speak with friends following the service at the cemetery. Pugh Funeral Home in Asheboro will be handling the arrangements.
