Mildred (Mimi) Irene Holt

Mildred (Mimi) Irene Holt, age 75, of Asheboro passed away on Monday, December 14, 2020 at Clapp's Convalescent Nursing Home. Miss Holt was born in Randolph County on February 18, 1945 to D.W. and Julia Louise Huneycutt Holt. Mildred attended Asheboro City Schools for 12 years graduating from Asheboro High School in 1963 and attended Meredith College for four years graduating in 1967. Mimi attended the First United Methodist Church from infancy in the Cradle Roll and was a lifelong member. She sang in the Intermediate and Young People’s Choir. She inherited her dad’s love of animals starting with her first of many dogs, Coonie. She had a pony as a child and enjoyed horseback riding well into her adult years. Among her school interests were the Marching and Chapel Bands in high school. She was a percussionist, specializing in tympani and glockenspiel. She was Girls’ Yearbook Sports Editor and a member of the Beta Club and Quill and Scroll Club. After college, Mimi worked in the State Archives of North Carolina in Raleigh. After several years there, she became a consultant serving the Pharmaceutical industry. She mastered computer research earlier than most and her skills proved beneficial in her professional career. While living in Raleigh, she became a dedicated bird watcher, a hobby that she enjoyed for years. She was also an avid gardener. She later moved her business to Beaufort, N. C., where, in addition to her business, she became active in civic and cultural aspects of the area. She loved the ocean and the Beaufort area. She enjoyed fishing in the waters around Beaufort in her Boston Whaler. She maintained her friendship with a group (aka The YaYas) of college classmates, Patsy Howell Cuthrell, Carol Ann Griffin Bell, Ellen Kirby, Martha Butler McGavern, Gail Butler Cannady and Betty Webb. She had known some of the group from summer camp at Camp Crestridge during high school years. She also had a talent for tennis and became a skillful opponent for both campers and staff at camp and in college. According to her classmates, she was a skillful writer, serving as editor of the school newspaper, The Twig. She was also an accomplished actress, performing in a variety of roles in Meredith College productions. Among her other accolades was “Most Likely To Succeed”. The group traveled together after college and spent at least a week together each summer. She also developed a group of good friends in Beaufort. In 1993, Mimi was struck by a brain aneurysm that resulted in a long hospital stay, and later she became a resident of Clapp’s Nursing Home in Asheboro. After prolonged treatment and therapy, she recovered her speech and a good part of her mental faculties. She improved to the point that she was able to travel back to Beaufort for weekend stays occasionally. She enjoyed her time at Clapp’s, especially Bingo game days, and made friends there among the staff and residents. One special helper for her was former neighbor, Clapp’s Volunteer Betty Nance Bailey, who helped her as her condition worsened, which allowed her to continue to play Bingo for a much longer time. The family is forever grateful to the staff and residents at Clapp’s for the outstanding professional and personal care she received there. In addition to her parents, Mimi was preceded in death by her infant brother, foster brothers, James Philmore Thompson (Theda) and Clarence Earnest Morris, Jr. (Peggy), and nephew, Shelton Stewart Holt. She is survived by her brother, Allen Franklin Holt (Sara Ann); nephew, Ross Allen Holt; grandnephew and grandniece, David Allen Holt and Hannah Robynn Holt and their mother, RoseMarie Howle. A private service will be held. Memorials may be made to The First United Methodist Church, 224 North Fayetteville St., Asheboro, NC 27203 and to The Class of 1967 Study Abroad Scholarship at Meredith College, 3800 Hillsborough St., Raleigh, NC 27607.
