Joan Parker Haynes

d. May 31, 2021

Joan Parker Haynes went to meet her heavenly Father on May 31. She died peacefully in her home at the age of 86 after a lengthy illness. She was baptized and reared at Pleasant Grove Methodist Church in Charlotte where she became the organist in the 10th grade. She was graduated from West Mecklenburg High School as salutatorian in 1953 and from High Point College cum laude in 1956 with a double major in religion and English. She later earned her Master of Library Science degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She retired from public schools in Guilford, Iredell, Macon, Forsyth, Randolph, and Union Counties after thirty years of service. She was a member of each church that her husband served, and was active in music ministry in the choir, handbells, piano and organ. She is survived by her husband, Donald, a Methodist minister to whom she was married for 65 years. She had three children whom she nurtured and loved dearly who survive her--Douglas (Laura) Haynes, Carol (John) Andrews, and Alyssa Eddy. She is also survived by her seven grandchildren-Alex (Lauren), Parker (Alisha), and Samuel (Ana) Haynes; Bradley and Christopher (Brooke) Andrews; twins, Jacob and Rachel Eddy; three great grandchildren--Wesley, Luke, and Lana Haynes; two brothers, Roy (Margaret) Parker, and Bill Parker, and nephew Richard (Rhonda) Parker. Joan enjoyed great health until 2019, and endured her illness with grace and dignity. She died as she lived-a devoted Christian. The family is grateful to the staff of Hospice of Randolph for their home care and compassion, and to her amazing caregivers. Her friends at First United Methodist Church, colleagues in school faculties, and friends at former churches have all been so caring and gracious. A family interment will be at Don's home church, Glencoe United Methodist. Her seven grandchildren and nephew will be pallbearers. A Memorial Service will be on Saturday, June 5 at 2:00 pm at First United Methodist Church, 224 N. Fayetteville St., Asheboro, NC. It will be live-streamed online at www.fumcasheboro.org (link on home page). The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall. Officiating clergy will be her pastor, Rev. Lynda Ferguson, and her grandson, Rev. Parker Haynes. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church Asheboro, Hospice of Randolph or High Point University Library Fund. Pugh Funeral Home in Asheboro is serving the Haynes family.
